Love for God - Love for each other - Love for learning

In Year 3 we are learning all about the Stone Age. So far we have created a timeline of the Stone Age and asked valid historical questions. We recently visited Salisbury Museum to learn all about Surviving the Stone Age. We handled artefacts, drew pictures and made notes, played 'Surviving the Stone Age' game and looked around the Wessex Gallery to learn how people lived and survived during that time. We finished our visit with a story about the Amesbury Archer. Our visit will assist with our diary entry based around the book 'Stone Age' Boy as well as furthering our historical knowledge.

Following our Salisbury Museum visit, we have written a diary entry from the perspective of Stone Age boy, a recount of our visit to the museum, a newspaper report on the building of Stonehenge and a Kennings poem on Stonehenge (which we shared as a class). We also created cave art based on the Stone Age.

In ICT we have been creating animations based on the Stone Age using Scratch. We created a character sprite, background and wheel/fire. We made a characters and objects move, adding sound too.

In maths we have been learning about measure, learning to accurately measure using a ruler and metre stick. We have been able to convert from mm and cm (and vice versa) and from cm to m (and vice versa). We used our knowledge and skill to measure objects around the room and convert them.

In PSHE we have been learning about changes in our lives and strategies to deal with change. We have looked at what we understand is our physical, emotional and mental well-being and ways to ensure we are physically, emotionally and mentally fit. We have also discussed choices, making the right choices and the consequences of our actions.

Year 3 Learning journey

During the final autumn term, we have studied Poland as part of our Geography topic. We have learnt the 7 continents of the world and know that Poland is located on the continent of Europe. We have looked at maps to understand the countries surrounding Poland and we have used our research skills to find key geographical facts about the country including size of population and its capital city. We have learnt about some of the reasons for economic migration and put ourselves in the shoes of a person coming to the UK from Poland, writing a letter back to our families. Year 3 also enjoyed a Polish day where we immersed ourselves in Polish language, music, dance, food and art. Finally, we have written a set of instructions on how to make a Polish salad.

In PSHE, we have discussed what was meant by bullying, how being bullied would make a person feel, and what we should do if we are bullied. We discussed a number of different scenarios about what we would do in each situation. We then designed posters to send out the message to stand up against bullying.

In English, to commemorate 100 years since the end of World War 1, we wrote remembrance poetry using imagery to think about those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We also designed and made silhouette windows to accompany our writing.

In maths, we have been learning about fractions, in particular revising common unit fractions, understanding non unit fractions and finding unit fractions and non unit fractions of a set of objects. We have also looked at equivalent fractions for a half, a quarter and a third.

In Spring 1, our Topic was Ancient Egypt. We learnt to dance like an Egyptian in PE and discovered about the mummification process, Tutankhamun and Howard Carter in Topic. Our visit to the Tutankhamun Museum in Dorchester was fabulous where we were able to put ourselves in Howard Carter's shoes, thinking about how he felt finding Tutankhamun's tomb. In computing, we discussed using the internet safely on 'Safer Internet Day' and practised researching safely online for facts about Ancient Egypt. In PSHE, we had a visit from the Life Education Bus, learning about what keeps our minds and bodies healthy. It was certainly a busy half term!

Our topic in Spring 2 was Rivers where we explored the physical features of a river, drew sketch maps of a river and labelled their features and looked in detail at the river Nile. Through our research on the river Nile in Geography we then wrote a non-chronological report on this river.

In Spring 2 we also enjoyed World Book Day where our theme was Shakespeare. We studied Antony and Cleopatra, made papier mache masks of the main characters and wrote a persuasive letter to Mark Antony to return to Rome.

In PE we enjoyed activities inside practising our ball coordination skills creatively inventing different ways to pass and receive the ball. We also practised our gymnastics skills with balancing and different ways of rolling.

Summer 1

In DT, we designed and made cereal boxes for a well known cereal manufacturer. Then, in English we wrote a persuasive letter and advert for our packaging services. In Topic, we learnt about the different types of settlements - hamlet, village, town and city and their different features. We then looked at these types of settlements on an OS map identifying some OS symbols too. Our science this term looked at light, including the best material to reflect light and how shadows are formed. Money and savings were discussed during PSHE, where we learnt about budgeting wisely and earning wages. Our PE lessons were great fun, where we practised various athletic events getting ready for Sports Day. In RE, continued the topic of Easter, creating a piece of artwork symbolising the Resurrection of Jesus with an accompanying letter to an art gallery explaining the symbolism. We also considered through drama what Jesus meant when he said 'Feed my Sheep' to Simon Peter. Our Pentecost topic begun with looking at the Fruits of the Spirit and the story of Philip and the Ethiopian. We continued to learn and practise more formal written methods for addition and subtraction in maths. What a short but busy term - have a look at some of the things we have done!
