READING

It is important that your child reads at home. As a school we want to help enthuse your child about reading! The following recommendations represent a range of genres which we hope will ignite, re-kindle or fan the flames of your child’s desire to read. We have chosen texts which may be less familiar, from authors with a track record in writing high-quality children’s books. Not all the obvious books are here (we know you’ve ALL heard of J.K. Rowling). However, we hope amongst this selection there will be a book or an author that becomes a family favourite for your child. Why are we so passionate about this? In the words of the incomparable Dr Seuss:

The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.

In year 6 children should be encouraged to read at home every day. They do not need to read aloud to an adult every time,  but it will help your child if you could discuss their books with them. I have attached a list of general questions you could ask your child.

Maths

Every week the children will receive Maths homework on the Friday. The set homework reflects the children’s learning in Maths and will help them to consolidate their learning. It is due back on Wednesday. Please let me know if you feel your child found the homework particularly challenging.

Mental Maths

In year 6 children should know their times tables inside out. You can help your child by practicing the times tables at home.

Please find bellow some useful Internet sites for maths. Children often love practicing on computers.

ENGLISH

English homework will be set on Friday and is due in on Wednesday. The homework will either reflect their learning in writing or will be a consolidation of the Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling we practiced during the week.

SPELLING

This year we are using new Spelling Logs which reflect the requirements of the new National Curriculum and include all the spelling rules children need to know.  It is important that children keep bringing the Spelling Logs into school every day as we use them to practice and learn the spelling rules attached. Please read the parents notes inside the spelling logs.

In addition children will also have a High Frequency Word Spelling book. This book includes words which children need to know and often don’t follow a particular rule.

Spelling Test will be every Friday and include a list from the pink spelling log plus five additional words from the High Frequency Spelling book. The children will let you know, which spellings they have to learn.

If you have any questions please come and see the year 6 team before or after school or make an appointment with the school office.
